Choosing the Right Management Course

Step 1: Get Clear About Why You’re Training

As mentioned above, there are many reasons to seek out a management course. Getting clear about your reasons for training will help you narrow down your search.

Step 2: Review What’s Most Important

Once you have an idea of the “why”, review what is most important to you in a management course.

Your reasons for training will come into play here, but you’ll most likely add a few more “have to have” and “nice to have” elements. Here are some examples:

  • Duration & schedule:

Work out what kind of training will fit into your schedule. How long can you spend at training?

It’s worth taking into account the fact that any training with a lasting impact will require some time investment.

  • Cost:

There are so many excellent and affordable options available, so begin by realistically evaluating your training budget before you begin your research.

Tip: While at first glance this may seem like the most important factor, it’s important not to compromise on quality and course content for the sake of cost.

If you can’t find a suitable course that meets your goals, don’t compromise.

Sign up for offers and news from the provider with your preferred course, contact them to discuss payment plans, or plan your training a little further out if possible.

  • Certification available:

With plenty of different management certifications available, it can be difficult to know which is best.

If “requirement for certification” was one of your reasons for training, you may already have a certification in mind.

If not, it’s worth asking your employer if they have specific certification requirements or researching popular certifications in your sector.

Step 3: Time to Research

Once you’ve got your list of requirements, it’s time to see what’s out there. Begin researching courses available, taking time to review the course details and compare with your goals.

Here are some helpful guidelines for your research:

  • Who Is Delivering the Training?

Take a few minutes to look into the course provider. You’ll usually find a clear outline of who they are and their credentials in an About Us page.

  • Check the Course Content

The course outline will tell you a lot about whether a particular course will help you achieve your goals.

You should be able to find course content on the provider’s website, or in a brochure.

  • Industry Specific?

Unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise, it’s almost always better to choose a course that is not industry specific.

You want your training and (where applicable) certification to remain useful throughout your career.

A non-industry specific course will provide you with the versatile skills you need for any management role or situation.

  • Check Eligibility Requirements:

It’s rare, but some management courses will have eligibility requirements, such as previous experience or a pre-existing qualification.

Tip: None of our courses have any eligibility requirements.

  • There Are No Silly Questions

Finally, it’s always a great idea to reach out and consult with the training provider before making a decision.

Ask about anything you’re unsure of, anything you can’t find information about, and anything particular to your situation.

Your training provider will welcome all questions and strive to answer them. It’s important to them that you are matching the right course to your needs.
